SMOKE.POT ™ was an actual website accessible on the world wide web (internet) using the domain name SMOKE.POT ™ at the turn of the millenium. It's purpose was to experiment with using alternative domain names rather than be forced to only use government approved domain name services which limited internet freedom.
At the time, registration of domain names by the general public was just three top level domains; .com,.net,.org. Other top level domains were limited; .gov,.mil,.edu. Registrations available to the general public were monopolized by just a few greedy registrars. As with other monopolies, domain name registrations were prohibitively expensive, holding back individuals from being involved in internet web site development.
In protest of such government control, and in order to get inexpensive domain name registrations into the hands of the people, several alternate name servers were created and were easily accessible on the worldwide web.
SMOKE.POT ™ articles were careful to not promote use of marijuana, which was illegal in most of the states in the USA. Instead, it contained opinion essays in favor of decriminalizing the use of cannabis. Tens of thousands of pot smokers were criminalized by the government, with many people arrested and imprisoned for simple possession of small quantities of pot. The site contained links to informative sites from groups which also supported decriminalization, such as NORML.
